Thanksgiving is my Birthday....

Well, my birthday is coming up, and so is Christmas. Every year My mom asks for my wishlist, sometime in October, and I finish it up and give it to her. This year I discovered that I can make a froogle wishlist. How cool is that? A wishlist that spans the entire internet? Fabulous. So for the past few days I have been creating a froogle wish list, that has the things I would like to have all on it, with photos and links to buy them. Awesome. Wanna See?

Neat! Looks like a few things on the list are the makings of another special "project" ;) Might want to add a cradle if you haven't already got one; my DH was suggested this when we were expecting our first (his second,) knowing that we'd want to keep our wee bairn close by for the first few months. I had a full size bed set up in the nursery/guest room when we moved Nike in to her room, and ended up sleeping there most of the time for middle of the night feedings. I kept falling asleep in the rocker while we were nursing and I was petrified I'd drop her, so naturally I laid down & we both conked out. DH was feeling a little abandoned, though.

When Nike was a year old, I went back to work and found a few interesting books at the library on my lunch breaks. One day I ran across one entitled, "The Family Bed" by Tine Thevenin -- what a difference that made in getting a decent night's sleep before work! By the time I found the book, Nike was eighteen months and had started cutting her molars, which had her waking up frequently in the night. Co-sleeping and nursing was saved everyone's sanity during that time!

We eventually gave the crib away -- it doubled as a changing table and napping place for a while, but a toddler bed serves that purpose just as well and you don't have to worry about them climbing over the rails and hitting the floor in the middle of the night when they get mobile. Also makes them feel like a big kid to have a "big" bed and makes it easier to choose when & how to start sleeping on their own. Less hassle, struggles, and unexpected visitors in the wee hours!

The Amazon reviews on Tine's book are mixed, and there are suggestions for a couple of alternative books on the same subject. One of them is by Dr. William Sears, a well-known pediatrician and author, and advisor to La Leche League. La Leche League recently released a statement renouncing a controversial report on SIDS recently issued by the AAP. Dr. Sears wrote one of the best articles I've ever read on the subject of Nighttime Parenting and SIDS, if you'd like to learn more about it while you're waiting for the stork to read your wishlist :) Until later, Amiga ~ enjoy the weekend!

P.S. I also learned about baby sling carriers from Dr. Sears. My favorite resource for beautifully-made tradional baby shawls is the Rebozo Way Project HAND-pda

Okay, okay -- I'll preview and proofread it next time (where's the edit button for comments?!) Take out a couple of instances of "was" where I changed my wording, replace the first instance of "recently" duplicated in the same sentence by placing "Last month" at the beginning, and put a 'ti' in traditional. If there's anything else, oh well... Penne Sue, not quite the perfectionist I aspire to be with a toddler by my side for distraction -- C'est la vie!
