With all this barcode technology, why isn't there a shopping cart that scans each item as you put it in... And gives you a total so you don't overspend if you are on a budget?

This is a fantastic idea! Because almost always, I'm adding to the cart and trying to keep the tally going in my head so I don't look like an idiot when I check out and spend too much!
My best friend lives in DC and there is a grocery store there that gives you hand held scanners and you scan your items as you put it in your cart. When it's time to checkout all you have to do is give them the scanner and pay. They randomly audit people as they leave to make sure they are being honest.

That would be way too easy because then you wouldn't overspend and the retailer wouldn't make as much money!

wouldn't that just make it too easy?
I usually estimate pretty well but it would be nice if I didn't have 3 kids in tow then I would use a calculator!
