Motherhood Uncensored- Blog of the Week

My blog of the week is "motherhood uncensored" She will be here all week, so go ahead and click on her fabulous little screenshot at the left (just below my profile), and MAKE SURE that ya'll talk to her, so she knows you stopped by. No more lurking. Stop back to visit her throughout the week!

The Story of the "special" Crock Pot.

I have accomplished alot since we last spoke. I talked to my sister and my mom on the phone and they discovered that while they were enthralled with my sister's car blowing a headgasket and her being stranded along interstate, I was lying on my deathbed in agonizing stomach pain. We chatted a bit. I forgot to tell them about the IKEA dream.

I loaded the dishwasher. I made myself a gourmet lunch of Chicken Flavored Ramen Noodles. Mmmmmm. Now I am trying to eat them without the sickness taking over.

I called to check on our furniture at Sofa Mart (furniture row) on December 26th I was told it would arrive in 4 weeks. It will be 4 weeks on Monday, the 24th of January (next Monday) and of course when I call they tell me it hasn't even reached their distribution center (it's not off the boat to the states yet, damn italian leather!) and that it will probably be another 2-3 weeks. I tried my best to not come unglued on the salesgirl who took my call, but I noted to her that we have a gathering in our home on February 13th, and that we were told the furniture would be in on January 24th, and that there is a probability that if the furniture doesn't arrive by then I will come unhinged on Sofa Mart. She alluded to the fact that there was nothing she could do about the boat and that she was making a mental note to never answer the Sofa Mart telephone again. And she made a feeble attempt to say "it could still arrive earlier" which made me count backwards from 10 and tell her "good day."

I decided to make a roast. For supper. Italian Beef. That ought to soothe the stomach, eh? So I got the roast from the freezer, defrosted it in the microwave, and carefully carried up the Oval Crock Pot. New let me explain, that this crock pot is my baby. When we moved in together I despertely wanted a crock pot. I wanted the black and chrome model, not some crappy country blue thing with hearts and vines. Or how about the brown one from the early 80's? GAG. Those despicable excuses for crock pots make me cringe each time I see a mother with poofy hairsprayed hair carrying one to a potluck. GET A LIFE! GET A NEW CROCK POT! THEY ONLY COST $30 Freaking Dollars!

Well, When we moved in together I got my fabulous black and chrome crockpot. And I Loved it. There was an unfortunate crock-pot incident that made me come unglued one Saturday morning. We didn't have a dishwasher or a garbage disposal. I will leave out the grim details and say that there was some grease/liquid that needed to be disposed of. I was going to be sneaky and housewifely and tiptoe outside to dump it. I had on my weekend costume of t-shirt and boy cut underwear, no pants, no bra, no shoes.... barefoot with my hair in a ponytail.

As I got out the back screen door (which is an evil trap of a screen door that has no spring left in it) The handle of the crock pot got caught on the handle of the screen door, ripping it from my hands and crashing it to the cement patio with a deafening shatter. So there I stood, in my underwear and t-shirt, outside, with barefeet, the crock pot and the lid shattered ALL AROUND ME and grease/drippings all down my bare legs and feet, and all on the ground. I panicked. Every bit of stress and worry and sadness that had happened in my life compounded into that moment and was represented by the shattering of that precious crock pot- and I, the calm cool and collect- Lost it.

Evan was in the kitchen and heard it happen and he came running down the back stairs and the look on my face must have been like Lucille Ball before a crying episode and all I wailed was "My Crock Pot! Waaaaaahhhh!" and Evan was totally the man in the situation. He was like "don't move" and he got a broom and swept up all the glass around me and picked up the pieces. The whole time I was a sobbing crying mess and he kept saying "it's okay, it's only a crock pot" and I would counter with shoulder racking sobs "but... it's... my... special... crock.... pot......" and he would say "we will get you another one! They only cost $30 FREAKING DOLLARS" and I was like "sniff... sniff.... really? I can have another one?"

And in that moment I loved him so much. The man who cleaned up the glass and didn't abandon me in my time of desperate need. A lesser man would have ran the other way. But he cleaned it up, and we looked FOREVER for a replacement crock for that crock pot, it was 4 months old and Rival didn't even make that one anymore. So we had to buy an all new crock pot, the exact same model. So now in the basement we have a spare "outside" for the black and chrome rival crock pot.

SO whenever I move a crock pot, I am excruciatingly careful. I don't need my whole life shattering before my eyes again. And today when I was making that roast I almost cracked the lid.

May you never break a crock pot, and if you have, I want to hear about it.

Foxes and Goldfish and Radioactive Cats- Oh My!

Damn the sickness for the dreams I keep having.
I dreamt that we moved. To an apartment building (WTF?) and it was like an entire old building (think small town main street brick with the tall windows) and it was top to bottom converted into living space for one family. I wasn't too upset except this isn't a FARM~ Hello. So I had seen the whole house, we were moving in, and Evan makes this comment that there is "more" of the house that I haven't seen, by the foyer, which is technically on the side of the building since we are on corner. So I go to check it out, and whoa..... this is where the dream gets trippy. The Foyer is HUGE like 4 times the size of our current living room. And just as I am mentally installing mudroom accessories, coat hooks and baskets for mittens that would make Martha Stewart Screech... I see a door, and as I walk through it I see that I have REALLY seen like half of the "house" and there are FIFTEEN more rooms. The floors are slanted in all of them. They sit lower than the rest of the building so the floors slant up towards the rest of the place, where there are all these doors adjoining them to the rest of the house. Every Room is decorated and full of furniture, and each one is like a different theme of place of time. They are all like bright colors (think Ikea Meets Austin Powers- If I'd only had go-go boots.) and they have funky lamps and carpets and artwork on the walls. I was like WHOA! AWESOME! I swear now that I am awake it was like my own IKEA showroom. (I think this all comes from nailing down the date for our IKEA trip with my sister just the other night) and I think to myself HOW will we POSSIBLY use all these rooms! And HOW will we possibly CLEAN them all? After a while I became mildly annoyed, especially by the slanted floors, and I had to wake up to get away from it because the rooms never ended. Bizarre.

Return of the Germs.

Home Home on the range....

Did I ever mention how much it sucks to be sick. I don't mean to be home, but I mean to be home and be really sick? Last night I was so sick that from 10pm-2am I could do nothing more than lie in a fetal position and think about my upcoming trip to the ER and how I needed to put fresh underwear like mom said and how I should probably brush my teeth but how would I put a toothbrush in my mouth without gagging.

Well, at 2am I finally fell into a delicious sleep, to be awaken at 2:45 with two pair of dog eyes looking at me. WTF? So I got up, let them out, drank some water, and slept till 8:30 when I called in (yep I called IN) and then I went and took a bath. Calgon didn't take me away but it made my sick skin feel fresh again. I ate some Yogurt Burst Cheerios and didn't feel terribly nauseous, and my stomach wasn't ferociously bothered by them. Then I moved to the other bed (it's more comfortable, and I was feeling like I may be getting bed sores) where I slept from 10:30am till 1:45pm. Like a rock.

There is so much to DO here if I only felt better. That's what is like torture. I am here by myself and there is no job in the way, I should be doing laundry and dishes and picking up and working on projects on the computer and maybe scrapbook pages. If I could only lie in bed and put clothes on hangers from a horizontal position.... I bet crippled people do it.... I need to quit whining and buck up.

Well, that was fun. Sleepy time....

Dazed Montage! My Mojo is BACK!

I made a google montage! I was surprised to see how many photos were mine, from my website. Totally cool. Click to see all the awesome details.

Thanks to BumblebeeSweetPotato for turning me on to this. Go make your own!

This site is too much! OMG! I could buy a whole new f$&@ing wardrobe! Computer stuff for me and gaming stuff for Evan. I want to win the lottery now! My shopping cart is at $98.00

Make My Day. I will post about you too. Promise.

So Christie just stopped by and made my day. I am not saying that lying around in bed in various states of undress with your laptop can't be satisfying, but just as I was getting SO bored, she took a step over that line from Lurking reader to COMMENTING READER! Yee-Ha! People READ my blog!

SO of course I had to go check her out and I was instantly thrilled. And she is LINKED to me! WOW! I am famous (mini dance in bed) and I should blogroll her too!

What is totally cool is that she has a link to a geeky site where I have never been, and I found two new items that I covet. Oh boy! I might buy the sweatshirt, because I LOVE hooded sweatshirts. I Love love love them.

Check out my new covets and go see Christie for me!

Well, I tried to work today. I worked about an hour and a half and then apparently the shade of green I kept turning was freaking out my co-workers and they agreed (and urged me to) go home.

So I did eat some lunch even though I didn't really want to. Now I have just been sleeping most of the afternoon. I hate being sick.

I bought myself a storage and organization magazine to read. That and my laptop are keeping me company my waking moments. Althought I am feeling a little Rip Van Winkle again. Plus I have a book I can read.

Oh well. Just wanted you to know I am not dead, but I don't have enough brainpower to blog anything interesting.

Gwen's Questions.... Borrowed from Tina.

Hi, Gwen. This is for you!

1. What does "surfing the 'net" encompass for you? Reading blogs? Browsing online catalogs? Reading news? Looking for weird stuff? Stealing jpgs? Porn?
Everything. Research. Educate myself on something new
everyday. Shop. Read Blogs (more that now than ever before) and
shop. I like to price compare and add things to my Froogle Wishlist.
I read news on MSN and search google for more info on what I determine to be
interesting stories, and I read Salicious Gossip and Heresay for my celebrity
dirt.

2. What are your favorite web sites to buy from? Or, to window-shop on?
Ummmm.... depends on what I am looking for. I love Froogle, and I
love eBay.
I also like www.countrydoor.com
although the rug incident pissed me off.
Target, Amazon, Barnes and Noble. I pretty much go to the places with
free or super saver shipping. That's what draws me in and makes me come
back.

3. What are your plans for Valentine's Day?
Well, the night before I am hosting an open house, with Longaberger. Come
to see the house all remodeled. It's going to be fun. V-day itself I
will be working. And hoping for beautiful flowers to arrive at work.
Maybe more than one bouquet. You can all send some to me if you want to
make my day!

4. What is your favorite flower?
Does this have anything to do with #3? My favorite flowers are ones that look
like spring. Especially Yellows and Whites (yellow tulips with White
Daisies), or colorful Bouquets like Gerbera Daisies, or something that looks
fresh picked and spring like, with stargazer lillies and greens and babies
breath. I like things that make me think of easter and spring and fresh
new grass and leaves on the trees. Puppies in the grass. New White
Tennis Shoes and Skirts with Sandals. Did you know flowers made me think
so hard?

5. If you had to have a wedding (or if you had to redo your wedding), what would be the most important aspect of it for you? Dress, flowers, music, food? Explain and describe.
Well since I just DID the wedding thing, and I don't regret anything about
it except for the argument I had to have with Yaletown Mini when they "didn't
have" the rental car I had rented 6 months in advance, I would say it was
perfect in every way. Although I hated that our hotel charged us an arm
and a leg for what was a MUCH smaller room than what was pictured on their
website. ($390 a night and it was TINY) But the details that mattered were
perfect. SO I wouldn't change a thing.

What Accent?

I thought this was funny, especially since Cari suddenly wants to make repeat things. Like when I say "Warsh Clothes" or "Body Pellow" she makes fun of me. She lives here too so I don't know where the hell she learned to talk.

Examples:
"acrost" as in "acrost the Street"
"off of" as in "get off of my chair"
and the extra "at" - "where's my coat at?"
it's POP not soda (WTF? Soda?)
and I call IN sick to work. Easterners call out sick. Now THAT is bizarre.
And they "order out" for delivery when we midwesterners "order in"
and "ruff" insead of roof (none of those high falootin long o's)
and my dad's sister is definately my "ant"

But anyway. Here's my results.

American Dialect Article
The Dialect Survey

Information on the "Flat" or "generalized" Midwestern accent (usually known as a non-accent):

The accents of the region are generally distinct from those of the American Northeast and South. They are considered by many to be "standard" American English, and are preferred by many national radio and television broadcasters. Prominent broadcast personalities of the mid 20th century - such as Walter Cronkite, Johnny Carson, John Madden and Casey Kasem - came from this region and so influenced this perception. However, in some regions, particularly the farther North one goes, a definite accent is detectable, usually reflecting the heritage of the area. For example, Minnesota and Wisconsin both have a strong Scandinavian accent, which intensifies the farther north one goes. Parts of Michigan have noticeable Dutch-flavored accents. Also, residents of Chicago are recognized to have their own distinctive nasally accent which adds to the uniqueness of the city. A similar accent is sensed throughout some parts of Michigan, Cleveland, and Western New York State. The sounds may have arguably dervived from heavy Eastern European influences in the Great Lakes Region.

General American-- After the Civil War the rapid and extensive move West of settlers from all dialect areas of the eastern US led to a leveling of eastern dialectal features and the creation of a more General American, or Middle American dialect. People who are said to speak "without an accent" are actually speaking with this leveled-out form of speech that developed from the mid-Atlantic stretching westward through the Ohio valley. Most features of Standard American developed from a levelled mixture of dialects mostly from the poorer classes along the middle Atlantic seaboard who immigrated west after the American Revolution to find a better life.
Main features:
1) retention of [r] in all places
2) pronunciation of [ae] in many words. Cf. British 'class' 'aunt'. Gives American English a flat sound to British ears.
3) vocab--stringbean (snapbean in the South), earthworm (angleworm), creek (not brook)
Origins--Derived from the speech of settlers moving west of the original 13 colonies into the Ohio valley and beyond. These people were of Scotch-Irish origin rather than upper class English, which explains the differences between Middle American and New England. The post-vocalic [r], which dropped out in the speech of the upper British classes, was retained in the English of the Scotch Irish and other originally Celtic speaking peoples of Britain. Competition between immigrants from Germany and the lower classes of the British isles in the push westward tended to level many of the differences peculiar to one or another smaller group of people. (The Pennsylvania Dutch are actually "Deutsch", in other words Germans.) The Middle American dialect area contributed the most to speech in western states and forms the basis of the speech usually considered as standard American today. There were, however, certain features that remained isolated and unique to one or another of the Middle American dialect group. This was especially true on the mid-Atlantic seaboard. Maryland adds [r] after [a] before another cons: [Warshington].
Now, this western, "leveled" English is itself showing signs of dialect genesis. The history of American English and of English is far from over

Rug Drama, Late to Work, Sick Husband.

Well, last night I went and got the bassinet and then on to Wal-Mart, and then when I got home I watched Desperate Houswives, Grey's Anatomy, Campus Ladies, Family Guy, and also did 5 more loads of laundry, folding towels and blankets, sheets and quilts. I also did a load of jeans. I put together a new shelf for our "pantry" area where I store all my Pampered Chef Stoneware and Cookware and all our canned and boxed food. I did dishes by hand and put them all away, I cleaned up in the bathroom, and fed the dogs. Pretty much just an extension of my last post.

When Evan came home he was not feeling well at all, stomach ache and headache and chills. He was moaning and groaning and he really had me worried that he was super sick, like maybe we would have to go to the hospital. So at 2:30 am I was still wide awake, listening to him moan in his sleep, so I moved to the spare bedroom, where I fell asleep and then slept right through my alarm, or turned it off in my sleep, until 9:30 when I woke up and was like HOLY SHIT!

Before work I still had to write the check for the cleaning people, take the dogs out for a potty break, fold a load of laundry, put the quilt in the dryer, and start another load, plus clear off what was left of the kitchen mess and put a plate and bowl in the dishwasher. PLUS get myself ready. So I was in "super-high-get-the-f&%k-out-of-my-way" gear once I woke up.

AND I am so pissed because my new 5'x8' area rug came and it DOES NOT MATCH! I talked to a "product specialist" who told me that the colors in the picture were reds and oranges and browns, and the rug comes and it is red and GREEN (not brown) and there is NO ORANGE! PISSED! I waited for two and a half weeks for that rug because it was on backorder, and then it comes and it doesn't match. Worst thing is it took $25.00 to ship it because it is so large, and now I have to pay to ship it back and then to have another one shipped to me. ARGH!!!!! That's $75 in total shipping! I tried to call the company today and was told "we are experiencing high call volumes so we can't transfer you to a representative at this time. please call after 8pm CST" CLICK. How Rude! No wonder they are experiencing high call volumes. If everyone else had to wait a month for their crap and then it came and it was not what they expected, they would be pissed too. So the answer to their problem? Get your shit in stock and get competent people, and then you won't have so many RETURNS and COMPLAINTS. Rocket science, eh? So I had to email customer service. and then I wait. until I hear back. I asked for them to have a UPS Pickup done on the rug and then to reship me a different one without charging me shipping again. We will see how far that gets me. But on the plus side, they haven't charged my credit card yet, so if I wanted to be a real bitch I could stop the charge until they make it right. But hopefully it won't come to that.

As for it being another freaking week. I will be okay. I will deal with it. The weekend was over SO FAST! Good god. This week will be pretty tame, besides the cleaning people coming this afternoon and my cleaning dog kennels on Tuesday night, my calendar is free. And I intend to keep it that way, so don't call me. LOL. I STILL Have a website to build for the Manlius Historical Society, a Presentation to finish for an Environmental Scientist, two sets of baby shower invites to make, print, address, and send (Anya and Carrie's showers) and a Princeton Computer User Group Newsletter that is LONG overdue. And did I mention I have a JOB? and a HOUSE to take care of? Yikes.

Feeling overwhelmed today, but also blessed to have a home that I love and that I share with a husband and two dogs, and a job that I enjoy and that pays the bills, and friends, family and co-workers who are fabulous. What's a little laundry compared to all that?

Sunday Already!

Well, most of today was defined by the word headache. As in I have had one all day. I did take a shower, put away all my scrapbook supplies and clean the scrapbook table, clean the bedroom and put on a bedskirt by myself (not easy on a queen bed), and washed some dishes, we moved the table into the dining room, raised the "pot rack" (cookware hanging rack), did 5 loads of laundry already with many more to come, Evan matched socks and put them away. I folded towels and rags and rugs and put them away. The dogs got in the garbage three times until Boyd got himself banned to the kennel for the entire afternoon. I picked up a baby bassinet from Cathie that she had purchased at my neighbor's sale- I told her the day of the sale like a year or more ago that I wanted it when she was done, and she emailed me the other day and so I went to pick it up tonight. It is nice, a Graco vibrating Bassinet. It's just a bassinet people, don't freak out and start (again) asking if I am pregnant, the answer is here if you would care to find out. I still need to go to Wal-Mart because we are out of cheerios and softener salt, a deadly combination. If my headache ever ever ever goes away I will probably be much better at functioning the rest of the evening.
